ANNOUNCING VALLUM, THE NEW APPLICATION FIREWALL FOR OSX

Today is the first Murus birthday.

The goal of Murus was to offer a complete yet easy to use front end for the built in NETWORK FIREWALL, pf.
We know a lot of Murus users are also interested in blocking traffic at application level, thus they often use an APPLICATION FIREWALL too.

The OS X built-in application firewall (the one you configure from System Preferences -> Security) is really poor. The market offers many choices, there are three or four third-party commercial application firewalls out there, and they are well-established working solutions. However we think that while some of them is over-complicated and over-priced, some others are too simple or not working as expected. So we decided to try our way.

Today we announce Vallum.

Vallum is an application firewall. It is designed to seamlessly run with Murus, and it's goal is to let the user monitor and block applications connections in a very easy and intuitive way. Vallum and Murus are able to interact, for example you can blacklist an IP address at network level from the application firewall.
Vallum is a totally independent app and can be used as a standalone application, or together with Murus and other Murus companion apps.
Availability and pricing information will be disclosed soon.
A private beta release will be distributed to selected beta-testers in the next hours and days.

It will be interesting to see how this fits in my workflow. I recently picked up a popular program to control at the application level -- too bad I didn't know this was coming:)

What we have today is only a proof of concept. Vallum is only able to block or pass a connection at application level, without any specific options. A process is totally blocked or passed. We are currently testing the kernel extension's and daemon's functionalities, however the true app has yet to be designed. So it is hard to say if Vallum will fit yours or anyone else's workflow :) It is also hard to say when we will be able to verify it.
We will post news as soon as they are available.
We are open for comments :)

I am very interested in Vallum, any idea when it will be generally available?
Any need for more beta-testers (like me)?

No, I'm sorry. My educated guess is that it may take several months. However we will release public betas so people will be able to test it very soon.

Yes :) Thank you!
Next week we will release Murus 1.3.6 and the first beta of Vallum. This beta will be freely available to all Murus Pro users. Glad to see that you are interested, TonO, as an early Murus adopter your opinion matters to us :)
